SITE (Nothing but SITE)
Site- physical characteristic of a place
- consists of water source, climate, soil, topography, vegetation, latitude, elevation
- combo. of all these things give each place a specific character
- vital in selecting settlement local., people might disagree fr cultural reasons (what u are used to, ex. hilltop for defense from attack)
- lands settled on back long ago where near water bc. you could ship stuff by boat, and water access builds pop.
- Manhattan NY is 2x as big as it was in 1626 bc. the East and Hudson rivers were filled with dirt and soil to make land.
- landfill in 18th century- sinking an old ship and putting trash on top of it
- ex. NY permitted construction of Battery Park (57 hectare, 142 acre) - 20,000 housed residents, 30,000+ office jobs
