Why Socrates why

Sophists and other philosophers like Socrates might have started questioning the world because they saw all these bad things going on around them. They saw the generals put to death for terrible reasons, and they were put to death in a horrible painful way. The philosophers might have had a gut feeling that something was wrong. The society was once great, but how did it come to this. Their consciences may have been telling them not to follow the pack because what they are doing is morally wrong.  Aslo these philosophers and sophists started popping up right after their democracy had fallen apart. After the majority of Athens loved democracy and thought it was perfect it's flaws started shinning through and it fell apart. If the normal way of law was wrong before what makes the new way right, or what ensures the new way of life will not fall apart later? The philosophers wanted to find the truth in order to make a better society that will not come crumbling down because of the death of one person. The sophists and philosophers wanted to better their society and create a new way of life that is much better then the old ways. They got rid of the gods and created new values because as democracy fell it took Athenian values with it.  The some philosophers and sophists had conflicting ideas but both ideas were new and involved examining and questioning the world around them. The sophist and philosophers may have began questioning the world around them because when they did not question and went with the crowd; what the crowd choose (democracy) fell apart and devastated Athens. Aslo they may have had a gut feeling or their conscience step in ad say this is morally and that the values we live by are not morally right either.
