longitude

Sorry I forgot to do this yesterday, but I fell asleep. I was very sick, and woke up as i remembered that i forgot to email my teacher.

longitude- (meridians) geographic coordinate, specifies e/w position of a pt. on earth, measured by imaginary lines circling earth, running through poles. measures distance e/w from prime meridian. 
prime meridian- passes thro Greenwich, England, 0 degrees longitude, n/s direction measures e/w of prime meridian, farthest  at equator , meet at poles, equal in length
time zones- region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, social purposes

  • tend to follow- boundaries of countries bc. of convenience for areas in close commercial communication to keep the same time 
  • earth is 360 degrees divided 360 by 24 timezone's one for each hour of the day =15 degrees, each 15 degree band of long is a standard time zone 
  • UTC (coordinated universal time)- primary time standard by which the world regulates time and clocks
  • GMT (Greenwich mean time)- synonym for UTC, predates UTC by 300 yrs
    • ex. eastern time zone in the U.S is UTC-5:00, Western time zone in U.S and Canada is  UTC- 8:00

Today we listen to a educational parody about Rome. It was really funny and not what i had expected. I had just woken up when i listened to it and i did not know my volume was up so the song defiantly gave me a wake up call. I started laughing and ended up spitting out my water. Greek Architecture

This is the temple of Hera the Greek goddess of marriage and queen of the gods in Olympia . It was built in 590 and is believed to have been built with wood and replaced with stone later. The temple has 16 columns and  was destroyed by an earthquake in the fourth century.  This is a sculpture of Athene in the Parthenon. You can tell it is her by her shield with a snake on it and an owl at her side. She is the patron Goddess of Athens and the Parthenon was partially built to honor her. It was mainly built to establish Athenians and Greeks s great architects and built them a reputation for that  during the beautification of Athens.
