haves- advanced, immunity, good health care
have not's- no immunity, little/no health care, not advanced, little tools, low life expectancy
same as saying sick and poor and healthy and healthy
where you live your environment effect your life
global inequality- why still based on what happened 1300 yrs
combination of English words and New Guinean language
incorporating English into their words
they lived in New Guinea 40000 yrs more then people in continents but much poorer
Yali- asked question to diamond that lead to this book and movie and investigation of global inequality
why you white men have so much cargo, but we New Guineans have so little
not about people with better life style just haves/ have not's
New Guineans- cargo - materials goods brought by Europeans/ Americans
cargo- symbol white men's power
colonist believed power was determined by race, saw themselves as genetically superior
doesn't take long after arrival for colonist to oppress them and become in charge
New Guineans- build stuff for 1000s yrs with nothing only their surroundings w/out tools
ingenuity very smart learning to develop diff. skills sets
great civilizations- Greece (Colosseum) Egypt (pyramids), Rome
all great civilizations have 3 things in common: advanced tec., large pop., well organized work force
pre-history (before things wee written) 13000 yrs ago
middle east - 1st place to become civilized, forests trees plants and people could hunt and gather- small mobile groups- followed migration for food
Papa New Guinea, Amazon Rain forest deep in forests - still hunters and gathers
they are in stone age, prehistory, pre stage 1 of development
hunting- knowledge of all species, prob.- cant find enough food, takes time to track the animals, need to be lucky and no certainty the animal will die or hunter will use bow the right way, and cant sore the food so only get it for a certain amount of time
gathering- by women, more relied upon, mostly gathered SAGO- pulp in sago tree w/ little calories and protein, they stripped bark from tree
more productive, alot of work for not much food from sago tree only 70 ibs, and cant be stored (why little people in hunting and gathering group) / takes a long time to prepare so they can eat
middel east barely and wheat is what was gathered
12500 yrs ago ice age like conditions arrived with a drought and most animals and plants died
IAN KITE ARCHEOLOGIST- discovered oldest known settlement (either in or called Draa)
small village prob earliest permanent settlement in the world w/ 40-50 people ( H and G group had 4-15) 11500 settlement was made
1st granary in the world - protect grain from dry humidity, moisture, bugs, water, and kept fresh and could store food yr. round
during drought people stayed near water and grew their own barley and wheat selecting the strongest, best tasting seeds to plant again -Domesticating plants (nature changed by human interference) 1st time every in middle east
The people of Draa stayed in the same place and had a bigger pop. for more people to work
